Jostle defined employee engagement perfectly and simply, stating that it “describes people who are committed to their work and the goals and values of their company.”
The platform, offering companies a central, internal communications hub, found that engagement boosts productivity, increases customer satisfaction, helps retain talent, enhances company culture, and makes teams more successful.
We too explored the importance of engagement to business performance – learning that it does in fact help with retention, productivity, and company culture. However, it also flourishes innovation and creativity. When engaged employees feel a sense of purpose, they’re committed to the company, and invested in its success. This fosters inspiration and unique ideas that could produce new strategies, help solve longstanding problems, and find ways to impact growth.
Built In, an online community for start-ups and tech companies, complements these findings. It adds that since engagement is highly important to employees, it should be just as important to companies. “Prioritizing employee engagement shows your staff that you care about each of them as individuals, not just as contributors to the company.”
It also states that employee engagement boosts brand visibility and reputation. Driven employees are more likely to become company ambassadors and attract new talent.
Built In also references the relationship between engagement and burnout. “Employees who feel fulfilled and engaged by the work they do are likely to feel happier in their lives overall,” the organization states. “While employees in workplaces that are disengaging, or outright toxic are three times more likely to suffer from depression and other mental health issues.”
Along with interesting tasks, psychological safety and career development opportunities, companies have to offer employees extras such as mental health days, access, and benefits for therapy, and paid sick leave in order to avoid burnout. This investment leads to better mental health overall and reinforces contentment and employee welfare.
Engagement significantly influences how successful a company is going to be. Businesses that place a strong emphasis on improving, sustaining, and providing a more engaged work environment are already on the right path.
