The Importance of Connection

Mindfulness

Human connection plays a key role in shaping our emotional well-being, health, and overall quality of life. Our relationships with others give us a sense of belonging, support, and understanding. Connection has been linked to lower levels of stress, improved self-esteem, and happiness. Connection has also been found to be a better predictor of health than exercise, diet or smoking. It can also foster a sense of community and compassion.

Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17) and Family Day (February 19 – Ontario, CA) are two days that celebrate the importance of human connection. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation put together several resources on things we can do to spread a little joy.

Ideas include:

  • Writing a kind note or thank-you card
  • Holding the door open for someone
  • Giving a compliment
  • Participating in a community clean-up at local parks and trails
  • Practicing self-care and speaking kindly to yourself
  • Leaving a positive online review for local businesses
  • Hosting a food drive or fundraiser for a local charity or shelter
  • Modelling inclusion and kind behaviour in the workplace
  • Creating a safe and supportive environment for employees
  • Praising someone for doing a good job
  • Apologizing to someone

Explore Ontario has also put together a list of activities families can enjoy together this Family Day, including weekend resort getaways, fishing trips, winter sports, indoor water parks, and visiting museums and local attractions.
