When the United Nations launched International Day of the Girl, they did so with the hope of bringing awareness and attention to issues affecting 600 million girls around the world. The aim was to develop collective efforts that would provide girls with more opportunities, preserve their legal rights, and eliminate gender inequality in areas of education, careers, and health and wellness.
The day actually stems from the Beijing Declaration. Considered to be “the most progressive blueprint ever for advancing the rights of not only women but girls. The Beijing Declaration is the first to specifically call out girls’ rights.” While International Day of the Girl is about bringing attention to important issues, it is also a celebration of what girls around the world have accomplished, the influence they have, and how they persevere against the inequalities they’re still subjected to. It signifies girl power and the hope for an even more equitable and inclusive future for all.
At Glass of Learning, we take great pride in having a CEO who is not only a successful woman entrepreneur, but one that supports and promotes inclusion and equal opportunity. We’re firm believers in getting educated on issues that affect our local communities, as well as global issues – continuous learning and development are the very core of our business. This is why commemorating and being aware of days like this are so important.
Here are some tips from the United Nations on ways you can support girl changemakers:

- Encourage government officials and policymakers to strategically invest in programs that specifically target inequality
- Collaborate with credible female influencers across industries to develop campaigns that will positively impact and support girls’ rights
- Understand and commit to making a change to local issues that negatively affect girls
