The Basics of DiSC and the Value of our Differences

Communication, Leadership, Team Engagement

Understanding our unique behavioural styles make us more accepting of one another. While we all input and output information and experiences differently, being aware of how others process information and actions, can guide us towards better collaboration and adaptation.

Everything DiSC® is a personal development learning experience that can help. Developed by psychologist William Moulton Marston, DiSC measures an individual’s preferences and tendencies through a model categorized into four behavioural styles: D: Dominance; i: Influence; S: Steadiness; and C: Conscientiousness.

The Four Styles:

  • Dominance style is active and questioning. It defines people who are direct, forceful, and outspoken with their opinions.
  • Influence is active and accepting, and relates to people who are outgoing, enthusiastic, and lively.
  • Steadiness is thoughtful and accepting, and describes people who are gentle, accommodating, and patient with others’ mistakes.
  • Conscientiousness is thoughtful and questioning. It aligns most with people who are analytical, reserved, and precise.

Most people are a blend of all four styles – with one or two being most dominant. In business, understanding and embracing the relevance and benefits of DiSC can improve communication, unite teams, and help employees align with company goals.

The past three years have taken a significant toll on our personal lives, mental health, and workplace dynamics. Withstanding and recovering from a worldwide pandemic; navigating through the Great Resignation and widening skills gap; and struggling to find and retain talent, have caused severe uncertainty and disengagement from employees across various industries. Everybody wants reassurance and a trusting, supportive, and influential work environment. Employees want to feel heard and understood. They want to know that there is a future for them at the company they’ve dedicated so much of their time and effort to.

The Wiley Workplace Research Survey, developed by multinational, academic publishing company, Wiley, found that appreciated employees will positively and continually impact a company’s performance. This shouldn’t come as a surprise. In fact,

  • 96% of respondents surveyed said they would be more productive.
  • 97% said they would be more motivated.
  • 96% said they would stay with the company longer when they felt valued by their employer.

Therefore, this is exactly why committing to and investing in employee development, and understanding behaviour tendencies is so important – now more than ever. Everything DiSC allows you to have a common language to communicate more effectively with team members. Resulting in improved communication, enhanced trust, and team members feeling more valued and understood.
