Practice the 4C’s of Building Trust in the Workplace

1. Communication:

  • Be willing to be vulnerable – considered the root of authenticity and the first step in building trusting relationships.
  • Set goals, priorities and expectations – check in with your team regularly to ensure these are on track.
  • Encourage team members to own problems and discuss solutions they will implement.
  • Keep the team updated on new or additional information.

2. Consistency:

  • Create an inclusive work environment where people can be their authentic selves and contribute their best talents.
  • Notice when team behaviors are off track and correct them.
  • Schedule regular touch base times with each team member.
  • Be real, share truth, eliminate sugar coating.

3. Caring

  • Spend time with your team – get to know them as individuals; make personal connections.
  • Understand the leadership style each individual requires and responds to; avoid mismanaging, micromanaging or delegating too soon or too late.
  • Open up and share information on the company; keep your team updated on information or changes.
  • Let your team know you are available for them.

4. Celebrate

  • Celebrate a job well done – give credit where it is due.
  • Notice when people are doing things right and provide recognition.
  • Look for untraditional milestones to celebrate to mix things up.
