“The single greatest advantage any company can achieve is organizational health.”
This quote by author and business management consultant Patrick Lencioni should be a guiding light for all leaders, teams, and employees. Their collective pursuit and implementation of this concept is ultimately how an organization becomes agile, resilient and builds a legacy.
In our recent blogs about organizational health, we spoke about what a healthy organization looks like; and how to assess and improve the current state of your company. Software company ChartHop provides an excellent checklist on this topic – written by tech guru Rich Rudzinski, CEO of Drivey, Tragic Media and Oversight. It includes 24 strategic questions broken down by six themes: leadership, processes, professional development, workplace culture, employee engagement, and customer loyalty. Within each section are four supplementary questions that guide the assessment and determine how your organization measures up. The key is to be completely honest when answering the questions in order to get a true sense of what your company’s strengths are, and the areas for improvement.
Are you an Effective Leader?
At the top of the list, is the question: ‘Are You an Effective Leader?’ Pretty bold, right? The aim is to begin with an individual assessment before reviewing teams, and the company as a whole. The question prompts leaders to be critical of themselves and their abilities. Furthermore, Rudzinski encourages a well-rounded answer stating that, “self-evaluations are hard to complete and are sometimes prone to blind spots. That’s why sending out surveys to your team or adopting regular 360 reviews help determine next steps as a people leader.”
Another interesting question focuses on how leaders care for employees and the development opportunities offered by the organization. “Professional development is now a way to engage your workforce, close skills gaps, and help employees grow within their career paths,” Rudzinski says. “And its what employees want. In fact, over 35% of those who left their jobs in 2021 reported the cause as ’lack of career development.’”
Several other important questions ask whether leaders have created a culture in which employees feel psychologically safe – something we explored in a recent blog; if people have a voice in planning initiatives; if the business offer benefits for employees’ well-being; and if customers are satisfied?
This checklist is a great start in helping you assess your organization’s health. We also encourage you to get in touch with our team, so that we can discuss your needs, strengths and areas for improvement.
