Trust is the most important, sometimes unspoken promise that exists between us and the people we interact with. So, establishing trust in the workplace – where we spend most of our time – is a no-brainer. It should be safe for an employee to assume and expect that they can trust their boss and the organization they work for. Unfortunately, and regrettably, it is not always the case.
In a recent blog, we explored ways leaders can help build trust through clear communication, being consistent and caring, and celebrating successes. Vulnerability in particular was one topic we touched on. It’s important for leaders to be vulnerable as this is considered the root of authenticity and the first step in building trusting relationships.
International magazine HR Digest shares this same sentiment. In the article Vulnerability in Leadership: Why Being Human Is Good for Business, author Anna Verasai states: “By showing vulnerability, leaders demonstrate their authenticity and create an environment that fosters trust and openness. This, in turn, leads to increased engagement and commitment from team members, which is crucial for leadership success.”
How Leaders Can Show Their Vulnerability:
- admitting mistakes
- asking for help
- sharing personal stories
- encouraging feedback
- allowing others to be vulnerable as well
How Can Vulnerability Help Your Team?
- creating an environment of psychological safety and wellbeing
- providing employees with a sense of belonging
- enabling teams to tackle problems with more clarity, understanding and speed
- allowing employees to develop better relationships
- encouraging employees to ask for help
Leaders who are able to cascade an atmosphere of trust not only amongst their direct reports, but teams across the company, are more approachable, personable, and human. Furthermore, employees that feel safe and comfortable in being vulnerable will be more committed, and honour their roles, goals, and the organization they work for.
