As with everything in these Covid times, we have had to adapt how we learn in a physically distanced world. There has been an explosion of online learning resources and programs over the last year. In this blog, we will look at 3 reasons why remote learning is so great and 3 things that make it challenging.
Silver Linings to Remote Learning
Increased Flexibility – being able to access educational programs remotely provides the ability to learn anywhere, anytime at any pace. Learners aren’t restricted to traditional classroom settings or schedules which can allow them to create the space and pace they need to learn effectively.
Access to Resources – both instructors and learners can access a variety of resources easily through the internet and online learning portals. Instructional videos and expert perspectives can be accessed more readily online. Mural boards and other interactive platforms can help learners view content and interact in creative ways and test for comprehension more easily.
Save Time and Money – not having to travel (or move) to another location to obtain training or learning programs can save a lot of time and money. Learning from home can provide access that might otherwise be inaccessible because of the cost and time commitment involved.
Stumbling Blocks of Remote Learning
Screen Time – being online for learning can exponentially increase the amount of time learners are spending on screens. Managing online distractions can be challenging while learning virtually. It is important to schedule regular breaks away from the screen, turn off email notifications or other diversions that might take attention away from the learning, and be sure to stretch often.
Technical Issues – depending on your internet connection and the program being used for online learning, bandwidth issues and glitches can cause frustration for both learners and instructors. Ensuring that you have a stable, reliable connection and a quality computer is essential for online learning success and can be financially difficult for some.
Isolation – being isolated from peers in a learning group can be extremely challenging for some. Utilizing breakout groups and online videoconferencing with options to have one-one conversations with others can help to mitigate some of the isolation people feel in the digital learning environment. Alternating the small groups in breakouts can give participants the feeling they are moving around a classroom and talking with several people.
Finding the right learning program to suit your individual style is important. With the increase in online options, take the time to think about what is most important to you for a quality learning experience. Choosing well will feel more like a silver lining than a stumbling block.
