5 Ways to Cultivate More Confidence at Work

Leadership, Productivity

Confidence is a dynamic characteristic to have in the workplace and is a key stepping stone for fulfilling a successful career. Over time, our confidence either depletes as we make mistakes or grows as we accomplish tasks and excel further in our lives. Confidence isn’t a personality trait or a fixed attribute; it’s the outcome of the thoughts we think and the actions we take. Most importantly, confidence is learnable.

Often, the difference in our levels of confidence comes down to how we react to criticism, our ability to gain knowledge and experience, and is ultimately a result of our experiences and how we’ve learned to react to different situations. Confidence is not something that happens easily and quickly- it is a process that takes time to cultivate and build.

With consistent effort and the courage to take risks, we can gradually expand our confidence and with it, our capacity to build more of it. Here are five ways to cultivate more confidence at work:

  1. Consider Professional Development Training

Developing the skills that you rely on for your job can impact not only your proficiency at work, but your overall confidence. When you further develop your skill level, you can improve the way you perform in your role and this can have a positive influence on increasing your confidence. Consider putting some attention towards professional development training as it can offer you the information you need to boost your knowledge and qualifications, as well as your levels of confidence.

  1. Focus On Your Strengths

One of the best ways to build confidence is to identify your strengths and focus on them. Focusing on your strengths can help you boost your confidence, as it requires you to measure your success and abilities. Finding ways to integrate your strengths into what you do every day allows you to focus on your abilities. When you lead from your strengths, you’re left feeling engaged, energized and self-assured.

  1. Believe In Yourself

It may be easier said than done but try to tell yourself “I can do this,” and believe it. Affirmations have the ability to prime your brain to start building these beliefs in your mind. Saying three affirmations to yourself each morning and telling yourself three things that you like about yourself can go a long way- with some consistency, you will be able to create the change of being more confident from within and building on the ideas of the person you want to become.

  1. Have a Growth Mindset

Avoid focusing on what you “are” and instead focus on what you can change and improve. Adopting a growth mindset will help you take constructive feedback and will allow you to work on yourself without lowering your self-confidence.

It’s also important to not take failure personally. It can be easy to attach a high level of your self-worth in your work performance- always remember that you can be so much more than what you do at work.

  1. Learn From Past Mistakes

Mistakes are inevitable when implementing personal and professional improvement plans and goal-setting strategies. The key is to examine your mistakes and learn from them. Once we shift our mindset that mistakes are good and failure is an opportunity to learn- we begin to realize that failure is actually beneficial to our growth. It’s difficult to accept failure, but failure can influence how you apply your skills in future scenarios.
